The Formula 1 track, which is about 10 miles outside of Austin, is hosting this event on the weekend of Friday, October 20 through Sunday October 22.

Austin Is the Official U.S. Formula 1 Racing Venue

Since 2012 Austin has been the venue for Formula 1 (F1) Its racetrack was built specifically for F1 but can accommodate all types of racing. Mario Andretti, the COTA ambassador and F1 world champion of 1978 opened the track on October 21, 2012.

The 3.4 mile Grand Prix circuit, situated southwest of Austin is a 20-turn track with cars racing counter clockwise. The natural terrain lends itself to sensational elevation changes that can take place within 40 meters. In fact, Turn One runs steeply uphill until curving into a hairpin turn.

Hermann Tilke along with American architectural firm HKS designed the Austin Grand Prix Circuit by modeling it after some of the best circuits around the globe, such as: Turns Three through Six that bear similarity to Silverstone’s high-speed Maggotts/Beketts and Turns 12 through 15 that share features in common with Hockenheim’s stadium section and Turns 16 through 19 that remind you of Istanbul Park’s multi-apex Turn 8.

The new track occupies 800 acres, but the site spans 900 acres with the circuit being the main aspect of it. The site also includes executive meeting suits, a banquet hall, conference center and a spacious outdoor area for live music.

In 2016, more than 289,000 people came to the Formula 1 weekend.

Taylor Swift performed live on Saturday night during the F1 weekend in 2016. Justin Timberlake will take the stage as the headlining performer this year on Saturday night, October 21.

What Makes Formula 1 Races Unique?

Each Formula 1 worldwide championship race is the highest class of racing issued by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and is part of a series of Grands Prix races.

Formula 1 (F1) takes its name from the formula or set of rules established for each racecar driver. A series of races called Grands Prix make up F1 and these races are held all over the world. Competing drivers must hold valid Super licenses, issued by the FIA. Races take place only on tracks that the FIA gives the highest grades. While most races occur in rural areas on tracks built for the race, some race events also occur in cities. The Monaco Grand Prix is the most famous race of this type as cars race through the streets of Monaco. It has been well known for decades and is one of the most prestigious races in the world. Europe hosts about half of the Grand Prix races held in a year.

Other famous Grands Prix races held worldwide include the French Grand Prix, the British Grand Prix, the Italian Grand Prix, the Monaco Grand Prix, the German Grand Prix, the Singapore Grand Prix, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Bahrain Grand Prix, the Korean Grand Prix and the Russian Grand Prix.

F1 cars are the fastest in the world for these types of tracks and can reach up to 233 miles per hour and can take corners at lateral accelerations in excess of six g’s.

Each year, the FIA uses a point system to determine the driver who is the F1 world champion for that particular year. Last year’s champion was Nico Rosenberg, from Germany. The last time the U.S. had a world championship driver was Mario Andretti in 1978.

The top Constructor (the winning racecar’s team and manufacturer) also receives a championship award each year. Mercedes was the winning constructor in 2016 and also won the titles for 2015, and 2014.
